All You Need to Know About WiFi Calling
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you needed to place a phone call without having any available cell phone service, such as when travelling or in rural areas? This is where Wi-Fi calling service comes in handy. Since the original feature for Wi-Fi calling on iPhone was built directly into the devices a few years ago, other smart phone companies have followed suit so that virtually every mobile device has an option for Wi-Fi calling. For learning more about what and how to use Wi-Fi calling, including for Android and iPhone Wi-Fi calling, check out the information we have provided below.
What is Wi-Fi Calling?
Wi-Fi calling is as simple as it sounds; making or receiving calls through a Wi-Fi internet connection rather than through a regular network service. Wi-Fi calling is useful when your phone’s mobile service network signal is weak because it can connect and maintain a stable call. However, the phone must stay in range of the Wi-Fi router to maintain service otherwise the phone will switch back to the normal service provider.
How Does Wi-Fi Calling Work?
There are various phone applications which allow you to make calls through Wi-Fi, such as Facebook Messenger, Whats App, Skype Viber, etc. However, calling directly through carrier-branded Wi-Fi is slightly different. The option to call with Wi-Fi is built directly into the phone already, and can be set as the default call method or to automatically switch to Wi-Fi calling when the phone loses service. To be able to use free Wi-Fi calling, you must adjust the settings on your smart phone. As you will see further below, activating Wi-Fi calling on iPhone is quite straightforward and not so very different than Android.
Is Wi-Fi Calling Free?
Those who prefer to make Wi-Fi phone calls generally do so because it is free and convenient. Whether you use a mobile application over the Wi-Fi connection or your phone’s Wi-Fi calls setting to make a call, there should be no additional costs to your phone plan. However, check with your carrier if you are abroad and plan to use your phone’s Wi-Fi calling, as this may not be a free service.
How to Enable Wi-Fi Calling
Different carriers have different policies regarding Wi-Fi calling, as well as the way to enable Wi-Fi calling on the mobile device.
To enable Wi-Fi calling for iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Wi-Fi Calling and turn it on. Keep in mind you will need to have at least iPhone 6 for Wi-Fi calling, as earlier models do not have the option.
To turn on Wi-Fi calling for most Android phones, Open the Phone app and tap the menu icon, tap Settings and you should see a Wi-Fi calling option that you can turn on.
