A country full of peaceful nature and charming culture, Switzerland is one of the most popular destinations in Europe. If you are planning a trip to the beautiful Alpine country, check out our list of best places and foods to experience while you are visiting!
Switzerland’s iconic mountain peak, the Matterhorn is one of the highest mountains in the Alps. At the foot of the mountain sits Zermatt, a wonderful village famous for its resorts and horse-drawn carriages.
Interlaken, the area between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, one of the most well-known places in Switzerland, is famous for its beautiful countryside and provides some excellent spots for outdoor adventures. Kayaking, hiking, and abseiling in the summer, skiing, and snowboarding in the winter are just some of the options available.
Zurich, boasts many of Switzerland’s main tourist attractions. While there are hundreds of museums and art galleries, be sure not to miss the Swiss National Museum devoted to the country’s cultural history.
When getting around Switzerland, the best idea is to take the train. While travel is a bit slower than by plane or bus, the awesome views will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable parts of your trip! The “Top of Europe” observation terrace along the train journey to Jungfraujoch is perched upon the longest glacier in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lake Geneva washes up to some of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. The French-speaking capital of Geneva features an old town with historic architecture and the European headquarters of the UN. Also on the lake is the medieval city of Lausanne, with views of the Alps and Gothic cathedrals. The 12th century Chateau de Chillon is another famous Swiss landmark perched upon the shores of Lake Geneva, and which has been the inspiration of many famous artists and writers for centuries.
Switzerland is, of course, world-famous for its delicious chocolate and cheeses. Tartiflette is a traditional Swiss food made from sliced potatoes, bacon, caramelized onions and of course creamy cheese. Raclette is a local cheese normally slow-grilled over a fire and sliced off in layers to cover boiled potatoes, pickles and onions. While a little hard to pronounce, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes is a delicious meat-based dish cooked with brown sauce, white wine and onions. Another must-have cheese dish is fondue, delicious and super fun to eat! Rosti, pan-fried grated potato cakes are one of the most iconic Swiss dishes. For something sweet, try a nut-filled tart called Nusstorte.
