Once one of the great maritime powers of the world, Portugal has an exquisite culture waiting to be explored. For your next trip, check out this compilation of the best places to see and food to eat while you’re in Portugal.
In Lisbon, you’ll find many of Portugal’s tourist attractions. Visit the magnificent church and connected monastery of Mosteiro dos Jeronimos as well as the 14th century National Palace of Sintra which is one of the oldest in the country and sits upon a scenic central square. The iconic tower of Belem is a definitive Portuguese landmark, so be sure not to miss it!
In the culturally vibrant city of Porto, the historical Rubeira district overlooking the River Douro is the best place in Portugal for dining and to find nightlife. While in the area, taste some of the famous Port wine at some of the many vineyards spreading through the countryside.
In the west, Cabo de Roca is one of the most famous coastal trails in Europe. In the Azores, head to Furnas Lake for camping and canoeing. Known for its green-tinged waters washing up to hills dotted with mud volcanoes and hot springs, you’ll be sure to find adventure. Ria Formosa National Park features a wide array of landscapes such as sand dunes, marshlands and small lakes to enjoy.
Portugal is famous for its fish dishes. The famous Portuguese food of Bacalhau is a codfish with many different options for preparation. The most popular is bacalhau a bras, cooked with a combination of onions, potatoes, olives, parsley, and egg. Sardinhas assadas, grilled sardines, are a traditional Portuguese food, eaten especially in summer months. Try the Polvo, or octopus roasted with potatoes in olive oil.
Cozido has many variations depending on the region, but at its core is a platter of boiled meats, sausages and vegetables. Caldo Verde is a hearty soup made with cabbage, potato puree, sausage and olive oil.
Bifanas are marinated pork sandwiches found everywhere in the country. Especially famous in Porto, Francesinha Sandwich is filled with meat, melted cheese, egg, and special sauce. Piri-Piri chicken in Portugal is not as spicy as it is known to be in the rest of the world, but still very flavorful and definitely worth a try.
